Nuno Loureiro
Professor, Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering, and Department of Physics; Director, Plasma Science and Fusion Center
Nuno Loureiro is a professor in both the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering, and Department of Physics at MIT, and is the director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center. Loureiro’s research interests include several fundamental aspects of magnetized plasma dynamics, such as magnetic reconnection, magnetic field generation and amplification, confinement and transport in fusion plasmas, and turbulence in strongly magnetized, weakly collisional plasmas. The Loureiro lab carries out a spectrum of research in nonlinear plasma dynamics, with a strong focus on turbulence and magnetic reconnection, working at the interface of analytical theory and state-of-the-art numerical simulations on super-computers. Loureiro received a PhD in physics from the Imperial College, and an MEng in physics from the Instituto Superior Técnico.
